2011 Educational Excellence Innovation Awards

To promote Excellence and Innovation in education, London Deanery, NHS London and the Education Commissioning System (ECS) invite clinical educators from London NHS organisations to highlight their recent novel approaches to simulation-based and technology-enhanced postgraduate medical and dental education.

Winners:

The Educational Excellence ‘Innovation’ awards were announced at the simulation conference – ‘Quality Improvement and Innovation in Healthcare Education’ – on the 19th of December 2011.

With 30 entries this year a strong field of training interventions which were innovative and promoted patient safety amongst postgraduate medical trainees resulted in a shortlist of ten entries being drawn up.

Seven of these were highly commended in the awards:

  • Barts and the London – Cardiovascular Training Institute
  • Barts and the London – Microvascular Anastamosis Simulation Hub
  • East London – Medical Leadership for Psychiatrists
  • GOSH – Developing Leadership through Simulation and Practice
  • GOSH – Joint ICU Simulation Training
  • GOSH – Transition into Leadership
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ – Improving Patient Safety in Critical Care
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ – Improving Patient Safety in Older Persons
  • London Trauma Office – Trauma Team Member and Trauma Team Leader
  • Royal Brompton and Harefield – Cardiothoracic Innovations

Unwilling to draw a single “winner” from such a strong field, the judging panel decided to award three entries trophies.  These were:

• Barts and the London – Microvascular Anastamosis Simulation Hub (MASH): A novel training needs focused and evidence based tool for advanced of training and education in microsurgery

This was recognised a detailed and comprehensive piece of work, slowly building up evidence to improve the quality of training being offered and making a real difference to the education of a trainee group.

• Guy’s and St Thomas’ – Improving Patient Safety in Older Persons

This was regarded as a multi-disciplinary, in-situ and simulation centre based training programme which was innovative in its use of resources such as the “old suit” which simulates the physical constraints of old age being worn by staff and, as part of a wider educational intervention, saw significant results including a 72% drop in Falls and Fractures and a 94% decrease in contact with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.

• Royal Brompton and Harefield – Cardiothoracic Innovations for High Risk In-Situ Embedded Inter-professional Team Training

This was awarded for the advancement of the Simulated Paediatric Resuscitations Team (SPRinT) training to cardiothoracic inter-professional teams through the development of novel tools, including a new, patented part-task trainer.  The course has been highly rated and is receiving recognition at conferences.

In addition, 19 Educational Excellence Productivity awards were issued.  From analysis of Trust and team’s returns of simulation-based training activity through the STeLI audit and taking into account the diversity of courses being offered and the scope of the resources available at the organisation, these awards recognise high-volume, high-quality training.  Those acknowledged were:

  • Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust
  • Barts and the London NHS Trust
  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Croydon Health Services NHS Trust
  • East London NHS Foundation Trust
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
  • Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – St Mary’s Paediatrics

Entry terms:

We will be particularly interested in innovations that promote patient-safety and high-quality clinical care.  These may include programmes supported by or utilising resources funded through the Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative (STeLI) but the field is not restricted to such entries.

The deadline for submiting entries is the 25th of November 2011.  Entry forms can be downloaded on the right of this page and completed forms should be emailed to david.marston@londondeanery.ac.uk

The winners will be announced at the Educational Excellence conference, 'Quality Improvement and Innovation in Healthcare Education' on the 19th of December 2011.
