2010 'Excellence in Education' Innovation Awards

December 2010 Awards:

The 'Excellence in Education' Innovation awards were announced at the simulation conference on the 20 December 2010.

For the first time there were three categories.

'Excellence in Education' Innovation Awards:

The third ‘Excellence in Education’ Innovation awards rewarded educational programmes that utilised simulation-based and technology-enhanced postgraduate medical education between March 2010 and December 2010 and promoted patient safety and high-quality clinical care. 

Commendations were awarded to:

  • Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust for developing and piloting a urological surgery course incorporating virtual reality simulators and crisis resource management.
  • The major trauma team at St George's Healthcare NHS Trust for developing 'shop-floor' high fidelity simulation trauma education in the emergency department.

Runners-up awards were given to:

  • King's College London's hapTEL project team for developing haptic virtual Phantom Head work stations for dental trainees and professionals leading to innovative and personalised training in operations such as cavity and crown preparations with immediate feedback and evaluation.
  • The St George's Healthcare NHS Trust's Advanced Patient Simulator centre for the Medical Emergencies: Evaluation, Response and Keeping Attention on Team communication and patient Safety (MEERKATS) and Foundation Education and Reflection: Real Evaluated team Simulation (FERRETS) both of which have seen high volumes of innovation patient safety focused training within both the centre and in the workplace.

December 2010 winner:

  • University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Education Centre's After Action Review training progamme.  This programme as seen an extremely high volume of training and is also inter-professional, focused on human factors and patient safety and seeks to embed checklists and guidelines within team behaviour. 

Trainee 'Innovation in Education' Awards:

We invited trainees to submit ideas for practical proposals for innovative projects that could lead to improvements in training.  We were looking for ideas that promoted excellence in education, patient safety and high quality clinical care.  The judges also considered the proposals wider application and the practical transferability.

29 entries were received which were reviewed and shortlisted to 11.  The shotlisted entries were invited into the Deanery's offices to pitch their ideas to a 'Dragon's Den' style panel consisting of:

  • Dr Ian Curran, Dean for Educational Excellence and Lead for STeLI
  • Anna Eastgate, NHS London
  • Dr Fiona Moss, Director of Medical and Dental Education Commissioning for London.
  • Rob Smith, Director of System Strategy and Development, NHS London

The panel decided to award project grants to 3 of the entries:

  • Mutjaba Husain, ST4 in General Adult Psychiatry and Fellow in Medical Education, South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust: Inter-professional e-Learning Modules on Self-Harm.
  • Greg Scott, Roshan Vijayan and Jonanthan Makanjuola, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust: Web-based platform for eletronic prescribing training and human factors research.
  • Susie Lingwood, Drazi Fellow and ST6 General Adult Psychiatry, Barnet Enfield and Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust: Delivering Medical Leadership Competencies and Psychotherapy Curriculum in Core Psychiatric Training.

Commendation for Educational Productivity:

As part of the auditing process of simulation-based training activity using STeLI funded resources we were able to capture an impression of the range and diversity of training opportunities in London.

We took an overview of the whole Trust and considered the volume of training on offer and the diversity of the courses offered and placed these within the context of both the size of the Trust and the levels of STeLI investment.

13 Trusts were awarded Commendations.  In alphabetical order, they are:

  • Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust
  • St George's Healthcare NHS Trust
  • South London Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust

March 2010 Awards:

The March 2010 'Excellence in Education' Innovation Awards saw an extremely competitve field, with commendations issued to:

Barts and the London NHS Trust for their patient safety training.

St George's Healthcare NHS Trust for developing emergency and team training within obstetrics using mobile simulation

Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust for SPRinT - Simulated Paediatric Resuscitation Team Training Program

The runner-up was the London Deanery Specialty School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the development of their pan-London 'Excellence in Education' plan.

The winners were the team from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for their world-leading innovations into Distributed and Enhanced Realism Simulation.
