'Quality Improvement and Innovation in Healthcare Education' conference a success

The London Deanery’s and NHS London’s fifth simulation conference – ‘Quality Improvement and Innovation in Healthcare’ – took place on the 19th of December 2011 attracting over 250 delegates to the Royal College of Physicians.

A packed programme saw key note presentations from Helen Bevan, the Chief of Service Transformation, discussing ‘Creating Contagious Commitment’ and Geraint Lewis from the Nuffield Trust on ‘Counter-heroism, Common Knowledge and Ergonomics.’

In other sessions senior figures from NHS London and the London Commissioner for Medical and Dental Education (LCMDE), Anne Rainsberry Head of People and Organisational Development, Fiona Moss, Director of LCMDE, and Diana Hamilton-Fairley Dean of Secondary Care Specialities, discussed the importance of education and excellence in the patient experience, service improvement and commissioning.

Meanwhile Elisabeth Paice, the Chair of the North West London Integrated Care Pilot, Roger Kneebone from Imperial College and Andrew Fordyce of South Devon Healthcare looked at simulation-based training as a tool for collaborative education and the understanding of process pathways.

Finally, a series of break-out workshops highlighted training resources developed by London clinical teams on behalf of the Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative (STeLI) and either available now or shortly via Synapse.  These included: Trauma Team Member and Trauma Team Leader; courses promoting patient centredness; Advanced Facilitation and Debriefing tools; Human Factors training for Hospital at Night teams; and packages promoting leadership, followership and management skills.
